Artist Spotlight #2: Florence + the Machine

FLORENCE + THE MACHINE! I could obsess all day over this band. I worship Florence Welch. Like, actually. Check out the links at the bottom ... You don't want to miss this stuff! :)

Name: Florence + the Machine
Genre(s): Alternative, Pop, Rock

Similar Artists: Marina & the Diamonds, Ellie Goulding, Kate Nash, I Am Harlequin
About: Florence Welch was discovered singing in a nightclub bathroom, drunk––which proves that great talent can be found in the most unexpected places. She is now the lead singer of Florence + the Machine, a band in which she is the only constant member. The band formed in London in 2007, and their sound is usually defined as soul-inspired indie rock. Florence was inspired by The White Stripes and Kate Bush when she was growing up. Her intentions are to write metaphorical songs that are "stories with consequences and weird morality issues." The band's debut album, Lungs, was released in 2009 and reached #1 in the UK's album charts in January 2010.

Arist Spotlight #1: Amy Winehouse

Hi, everyone. I decided to do my first artist spotlight on Amy Winehouse, because––sadly––she died today. :( It's so unfortunate; she had such a gorgeous, soulful voice, and I wish she could have done so much more. But what she did do was amazing. So ... R.I.P. Amy. You were incredible, and you will be missed.

Name: Amy Winehouse
Genre(s): Soul, Jazz, Rock n' Roll, R&B
Most Well-Known Songs: Back to Black, Rehab, You Know I'm No Good, Tears Dry On Their Own, Love Is a Losing Game
Similar Artists: Adele, Duffy, Lily Allen
About: Amy Winehouse, born in London in 1983, was a singer known for her combination of musical genres such as jazz, soul, and R&B. She was influenced by both modern artists and legendary jazz artists like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. Her soulful voice and creative mix of jazz with popular music earned her both critical and commercial success. In 2006 her album Back To Black was nominated for six Grammy nominations and won all but one of them––tying the record for most wins by a female artist in one night. She was also the first singer from the United Kingdom to win five Grammys.

Hello World.

*Waves* Hello everyone! I'm Brigid. You may or may not know me from my other blog, My Life as a Teenage Novelist––which is something you should check out if you love writing.

But this is not a writing blog. It's a music blog. I've been debating over whether or not to set one up for ... well ... a few years, really. But, what the heck. People tell me they like my music taste, and I love music, so it seems like a logical idea. I enjoy listening to music, I enjoy singing and dancing ... so yeah. Makes sense.

I'm not quite sure how this is going to work. I should probably start following other music blogs and find out. But I'm thinking I'll do artist spotlights, playlists, etc. It'll be fun. :)

So, I'll quickly introduce myself. I'm Brigid (like I said). I'm 18 years old. I'll be a student at Hampshire College in a little more than a month. My interests (other than listening to music) are writing, reading, tap dancing, singing, drawing, painting, etc. You know, all the stuff that will most likely never get me a career. YIPPEE! :)

I named this blog after a fictional band ... from some thing that I wrote. Yeah. I just like the way it sounds.  Woot.

My music taste is pretty random. I give every genre/artist/whatever a chance ... I just like anything that's good.

Anyway, I thought I'd share the top 25 on my iTunes just so y'all get some idea of my music taste:

1. All Hail the Heartbreaker  - The Spill Canvas
2. White Houses - Vanessa Carlton
3. Howl - Florence + the Machine
4. Kings and Queens - 30 Seconds to Mars
5. This is War - 30 Seconds to Mars
6. King of Anything - Sara Bareilles
7. Hype - Tegan and Sara
8. Raincoat - Crash Kings
9. Monster - Meg & Dia
10. I Am Not a Robot - Marina & the Diamonds
11. You've Dug Your Grave, Now Lie In It - Kenotia
12. Rabbit Heart - Florence + the Machine
13. All These Things That I've Done - The Killers
14. Hero/Heroine - Boys Like Girls
15. Hurricane - 30 Seconds to Mars
16. Brick by Boring Brick - Paramore
17. Dark Blue - Jack's Mannequin
18. Wine Red - The Hush Sound
19. I Still Remember - Bloc Party
20. February Air - LIGHTS
21. Olympus - Holy Roman Empire
22. Pick Up the Phone - Dragonette
23. Animal - Neon Trees
24. Hands on Me - Vanessa Carlton
25. Breathe Me - Sia
